What is BMR?
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest to maintain basic physiological functions like breathing, circulation, and cell production. It accounts for about 60-75% of your total daily energy expenditure.
Mifflin-St Jeor Formula:
BMR = 10 × Weight(kg) + 6.25 × Height(cm) - 5 × Age + 5
Important Notes:
- BMR is your baseline - you'll burn more calories with any activity
- Muscle mass increases BMR (more muscle = higher metabolism)
- BMR decreases with age (~2% per decade after age 20)
- For your total daily needs, use the TDEE calculator which includes activity
