Scientific Basis
U.S. Navy Method (1984):
Developed by Hodgdon & Beckett for the U.S. Navy. Uses circumference measurements to estimate body fat percentage. While not as accurate as DEXA or hydrostatic weighing, it's a practical, accessible method that correlates well with more expensive techniques.
BF% = 495 / (1.0324 - 0.19077 × log₁₀(waist - neck) + 0.15456 × log₁₀(height)) - 450
Note: This method may be less accurate for very lean or very obese individuals. For most people, it provides a reasonable estimate within ±3-4% of DEXA scans.
